A typical Surat home with a ₹3,000 monthly bill needs a 3.3 kWp system, which costs about ₹1,65,000 and comes to about ₹87,000 after the ₹78,000 PM Surya Ghar subsidy. Surat district leads Gujarat in the scheme, with about 74,840 homes on it by May 2026. Before anything else, check whether your bill comes from DGVCL or Torrent Power, because that company handles your application.

Surat leads Gujarat in PM Surya Ghar

DeshGujarat reported on 8 May 2026 that Surat district had about 74,840 homes under PM Surya Ghar. That put it ahead of Ahmedabad at 69,522, Rajkot at 65,514 and Vadodara at 50,100. Gujarat as a whole had about 5.94 lakh installations by March 2026, more than any other state.

For a Surat family this means the process is well worn. Banks know the loan product, the discom offices know the forms and inspectors are used to the work. It also means there are a lot of installers competing for jobs, and quality varies. Our guide on how to choose a solar installer lists the checks to make before you sign with anyone, including us.

DGVCL or Torrent Power, check your bill

Surat is the one district in South Gujarat with two electricity companies. Torrent Power supplies parts of Surat city. DGVCL supplies the rest of the city and all of the district outside it, including Bardoli, Kamrej, Olpad, Mandvi and Mangrol.

Both companies run the PM Surya Ghar and net metering process. The application goes to the company whose name is on your bill. When you register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in, choose Gujarat and then that company. The feasibility check, the inspection and the net meter fitting all go through it.

The subsidy amount is the same under both, because it is central. Export credit rates and meter charges are set separately for each company and can change, so confirm current terms at the time of filing. We file DGVCL paperwork every week. For a home in a Torrent area we check Torrent’s current requirements before we quote. Our DGVCL net metering guide explains how the bi-directional meter and billing work.

How the process runs for a Surat home

The steps are the same for DGVCL and Torrent homes. Only the company handling them changes.

  1. Register at pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your consumer number, mobile and email, choosing Gujarat and the company on your bill.
  2. Apply for rooftop solar on the portal and wait for the technical feasibility approval.
  3. Pick a registered vendor, who installs the system with ALMM-listed domestic panels.
  4. The vendor submits the plant details and applies for the net meter.
  5. The company inspects the system, fits the bi-directional meter and a commissioning certificate appears on the portal.
  6. You submit your bank details and a cancelled cheque, and the subsidy is paid into your account.

The portal says about 30 days for the last step. One of our Bharuch customers, Farhan Qureshi in Sherkhi, had the ₹78,000 in 6 weeks. Gujarat also routes applications through the state’s SURYA Gujarat portal, and the vendor handles that part. Our PM Surya Ghar subsidy guide covers each step in more detail.

These numbers come from our calculator at ₹50,000 per kWp installed, using 550 W panels. The subsidy is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third, capped at ₹78,000.

The savings column assumes each solar unit replaces a unit billed at about ₹8, which fits homes on the higher slabs. Smaller homes pay less per unit on the lower slabs, so their payback is longer. For a typical home, 3 to 5 years is a fair range. A raised structure on a tall building or a coastal-grade frame adds to the cost. Our solar panel price guide explains what moves a quote, and the savings calculator runs your own bill.

Public sector banks offer collateral-free loans under the scheme for systems up to 3 kW at concessional rates. Around 7% has been typical, but check the current rate with your bank. Our post on solar loans and EMI in Gujarat covers the options.

Apartments and housing societies

A large share of Surat families live in flats. The household subsidy needs a roof you own or control, and most individual flat owners do not have that. The route for an apartment building is through the society. PM Surya Ghar pays ₹18,000 per kW to group housing societies for common facilities, up to 500 kW, and this can include EV charging.

Common area loads such as lifts, water pumps and corridor lights run in the daytime, which suits solar well. The society needs a committee decision and must hold the common area connection. The size of the system depends on the terrace area left after water tanks and lift rooms, and on the sanctioned load of that connection.

Coast, monsoon and dust in Surat

Hazira, Dumas and Olpad sit close to the sea, and salt air reaches well inland on a windy day. On roofs in these areas we use hot-dip galvanised or aluminium structures and stainless steel fasteners. Surat’s monsoon is heavy from June to September. Output drops in July and August and peaks from March to May.

Homes near industrial estates collect fine dust and soot on the glass faster than homes in residential areas. Clean with soft water and a soft brush early in the morning, and avoid pressure washers and detergent. Hard borewell water leaves white scale. Our cleaning and maintenance guide has the full routine.

Textile unit rooftops

Sachin, Pandesara and Kadodara are well-known industrial areas around Surat, with many weaving and processing units. These buildings often have large sheet roofs and heavy daytime power use, which is a good match for solar because the panels produce when the machines run.

There is no central subsidy for commercial or industrial units. In our model, a business with a ₹25,000 monthly bill needs about 24.75 kWp, costing about ₹12.4 lakh, with a model payback near 3.8 years at ₹8 per unit. Businesses can usually claim accelerated depreciation, and your CA should confirm the current rate. Units on HT tariffs need a per-site calculation. On sheet roofs the purlins must be checked before any rail is fixed. Our post on factory solar in the GIDC estates and our industrial solar page cover the process.

A Bharuch shop that takes Surat jobs

We are based in Bharuch, about 70 km from Surat on NH48. We are not a Surat company, and we take Surat jobs when the customer is comfortable with that distance. The install itself is the same as in Bharuch. Our own team does the work with no subcontractors, and we file the subsidy and net meter paperwork.

The distance matters most after the install. A service call to Surat takes longer to arrange than one in Bharuch town, and a Surat-based installer may reach you faster. The monthly generation reports we send on WhatsApp help us spot a drop in output without a visit. Ask us how service visits would be scheduled for your address before you decide, and compare that with local options. Questions people ask

What is the price of a 3 kW solar system in Surat?

At about ₹50,000 per kWp installed, a 3.3 kWp system with six 550 W panels costs about ₹1,65,000 before subsidy. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy for a home of this size is ₹78,000, so you pay about ₹87,000. It makes around 421 units a month on a yearly average. Brand, structure height and roof type move the final quote up or down.

How do I apply for PM Surya Ghar in Surat?

Register at pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your consumer number, mobile and email. Choose Gujarat as the state, then choose the electricity company named on your bill, which is DGVCL for most of Surat district and Torrent Power for parts of Surat city. After feasibility approval, a registered vendor installs the system, the company fits the net meter, and the subsidy goes to your bank account.

Is my Surat home under DGVCL or Torrent Power?

Look at the top of your latest electricity bill. The company name and consumer number are printed there. Torrent Power supplies parts of Surat city, and DGVCL supplies the rest of the city and the whole district outside it, including Bardoli, Kamrej, Olpad and Mandvi. Your solar application and net meter both go to whichever company sends your bill.

Can I get the solar subsidy for a flat in Surat?

The household subsidy needs a roof you own or control, which most individual flat owners do not have. Housing societies can apply for common facilities such as lifts, water pumps and corridor lights, at ₹18,000 per kW under PM Surya Ghar. The society needs a committee decision and the connection for common areas. Ask your installer to check the society's sanctioned load first.

Do textile units in Surat get a solar subsidy?

No. The central PM Surya Ghar subsidy is for homes and housing societies only. Weaving, processing and other commercial or industrial units pay the full cost. They can usually claim accelerated depreciation on the system, which lowers tax in the early years. Confirm the current rate with your CA. Units on HT tariffs should get a per-site calculation rather than a rule of thumb.
